Turning Adversity into Opportunity: My Path to Fulbright as a Visually Impaired Entrepreneur
Studying abroad and exploring the world had always been a cherished goal of mine since childhood. However, the challenge lay in how to make that dream a reality and what opportunities I could pursue to achieve it. During my junior year, I discovered Fulbright through my university’s external relationships and scholarship programs, and my interest piqued as I delved deeper into its offerings, particularly through the inspiring stories of Fulbright alums. Yet, a daunting question lingered: how could a blind person navigate solo travel overseas and overcome the hurdles of crossing borders?
Despite my apprehensions, a single sentence in a Fulbright announcement provided a beacon of hope: “we encourage people with disabilities to apply.” It was a powerful affirmation that there was indeed a place for me in this world, where I could thrive and pursue my aspirations.
Upon graduating in 2021, I was confronted with the reality that the Fulbright Foreign Student Program for Palestinians required applicants to have a year of professional experience to qualify for the grant. This revelation felt like a setback, especially considering the challenges blind individuals face in securing employment in the West Bank and Gaza, where even sighted individuals struggle. However, I refused to be discouraged and instead took matters into my own hands.
I embarked on the journey of entrepreneurship, establishing my own business teaching English to fellow Palestinians, aiming to enhance their skills and bolster their professional prospects in a market where proficiency in English is highly demanded. Additionally, I seized opportunities to work with international organizations as a translator and interpreter, honing my skills and gaining invaluable experience along the way.
With determination and perseverance, I ensured that my skills and experiences aligned with Fulbright’s requirements, and I submitted my application with optimism. Luckily, I received the Fulbright award on my very first attempt. This triumph not only validated my journey but also reaffirmed my belief in the power of resilience and the boundless opportunities that await those who dare to pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face.
