A Year in the Fulbright Life: Maitha’s Story
For the next year, Fulbright MENA will be showcasing a handful of students as they study in the United States with their new series, A Year in the Fulbright Life. Each month, spotlighted students will share an update as they continue on their Fulbright journey.
August 2018
During the pre-academic program at Kansas State University (KSU), I got the chance to learn more about American culture, meet a lot of great people, and make new friends. Although I’m sad to say goodbye to KSU, I’m ready and excited for the next phase of my Fulbright journey at IUPUI-McKinney Law School.
March 2019
On March 28th, I was given the opportunity by the IU Mckinney School of Law to help celebrate Women’s History Month and present a talk on “Women’s Empowerment in the UAE: Achievement, Challenges, and the Way Forward.” It was amazing to see the engagement from the audience and to have an open dialogue about women in different parts of the world. Sometimes we think that things are different based on assumptions about certain cultures, countries, or beliefs, but it’s often surprising how much we have in common, and what we think we “know” is not necessarily the whole story.
May 2019
Graduation time! I graduated from the Indiana University McKinney Law School where I studied Human Rights Law. I’m so grateful to have amazing professors and classmates who made my time in the United States so special.
This picture is at one of the biggest events in Indianapolis, the Indy 500, which is the world’s oldest automobile race. Our professor took us there and we really enjoyed our time at this American cultural experience. This was my last fun event in Indiana before I moved to Maryland for my internship, and it was an awesome ending to a beautiful chapter.
This picture was taken in Minneapolis with my Fulbright squad. I keep saying this but it’s true — ”the best times are spent with family and friends.” You feel at home with them wherever you are. It’s so great to travel to see friends around the United States.
June 2019
I started my internship at the International Rescue Committee in June 2019. With this amazing team in the picture, we work to help immigrants adjust their status in the United States, obtain citizenship, and petition for more family and immigration services. It is a great honor to be working closely in this field with such an amazing team.
Maitha is a 2019 Fulbright graduate from the UAE. She studied Human Rights Law at Indiana University.
