A Year in the Fulbright Life: Hajar’s Story
October 2022
I have only been in Houston for three months now, but I’ve already met amazing and interesting people and learned so many things.
My Ph.D. research in computer science, notably in the cybersecurity field, continues to inform my practice, as does the experience of living in the Texas and conducting research at one of the best universities in the state, the University of Houston. I was lucky enough to work with different Ph.D. students in the lab, audit courses in cryptography and data management, take online courses, attend webinars, participate in university events, and experience campus life.
Along with researching, creating, and lecturing, I spent a lot of time walking and exploring the city, traveling, and forming lifelong friendships with people from different countries and backgrounds (many of whom I met at birthday parties or other events where I was able to share my traditions, my culture, and — most importantly — delicious Moroccan food). I also went to a yoga event during the full moon as I am an active person and work out very often.
Regarding my travels, I had the chance to visit Miami, Florida; Austin and Dallas, Texas; New York; and Mystic, Norwalk, and Stamford, Connecticut. I am also planning to continue my visits to Boston and Washington, D.C., to meet other Fulbright grantees and visit the Amideast headquarters.
Being fully immersed in these experiences, the language, and culture gave me a chance to understand and appreciate cultural differences between the United States and Morocco. My time so far has been incredibly valuable, and I will always be grateful to Fulbright for this opportunity. I am convinced that this coming year will continue to be a profound, formative, and unique experience.
Hajar is a 2022 Fulbright student from Morocco. She is studying Computer Sciences at the University of Houston.
