For the next year, Fulbright MENA will be showcasing a handful of students as they study in the United States with their new series, A Year in the Fulbright Life. Each month, spotlighted students will share an update as they continue on their Fulbright journey.

A Year in the Fulbright Life: Deena’s Story

August 2019

My goodbye was a karaoke dinner with my good friends! We ate, sang, and cried our hearts out. They put me on the spot with a speech, but it was a good night over all.

My Gateway was in Reno, Nevada. One of the nights, they arranged a hospitality dinner with American families. We had a lovely time experiencing American culture and food. Our host had the most beautiful and cozy house. There were photos of her family everywhere and she had the most awesome backyard!

A dinner was organized in the National Automobile Museum where faculty from the University of Nevada and important guests welcomed us. Nevada Lieutenant Governor, Kate Marshall, even gave the keynote speech. The museum had a good variety of rare and classic vintage cars!

Lake Tahoe, was the absolute best part of the entire Reno Fulbright Gateway! It took us a few hours to get to the lake where we played games, learned about the Native-American history, and ate a delicious meal. At the end of the day, a concert was organized and we got to see the beautiful sunset!

Deena is a first-year Fulbright student from Bahrain. She is studying Public Health at Indiana University- Bloomington.
